Sonar Fleet 1
Noroton Yacht Club

Fleet Racing:

Our final fleet racing of the season was last Sunday. We had nine boats racing in Marblehead in the North Americans but still managed to get six boats on the line.

Commodore Jayson was kind enough to submit the following recap:

A 16-20 knot easterly provided some big waves and a fun day of sailing no matter how you finished. Surfing downwind was great with just the right amount of drama to keep you on your toes. PRO Michael Rudnick ran a W1 and two W2 races leaving everyone pretty tired but happy to be on the water for the last Sunday of racing.

Team 500 had a new look and took all 3 races! The girls were awesome, fast sets and takedowns, trimming on the waves, surfing to the finish. (Commodore Lyden and Commodore Tankoos are now just writing checks and part of the shore crew for next year.)
Second for the day was Kirby and crew with the Sheehan/Sparkman boat in third.

Surrounding Commodore "I'll Sail With This Crew Any Day" Jayson are (l to r, top to bottom) Cathy Hoyt, Lauren Hokin, Gillian Jayson and Kate Lyden.

Sonar North American Championships:

The North American Championships were held in Marblehead from Friday 9/24 - Sunday 9/26. A very competitive fleet of 33 boats completed 11 races over the three days, in conditions ranging from light winds and flat water to 20 kts with big steep waves on Sunday.

As mentioned, there were nine boats representing Noroton at the NA's. Local boat and Doyle sailmaker Jud Smith won the event but the next two finishers were from Noroton! Peter Galloway, with finishes of 2, 1, 1 on the last day came in second overall. Lee Morrison finished third, only three points behind Peter. I am also happy to report that, for a change, Lee WON a tie-breaker! This time over Dave Curtis. Overall, Noroton had four of the top eight finishers.

Here is a link to the final results:

Fleet Racing:

Last Sunday was another great day for racing. The forecast looked iffy but the wind held, a consistent 7 kts, allowing PRO Rick Doerr to get three D1 races in.

In the end, Ed Sweeney and crew (l to R below) Commodore Art Collins, Ed, Gunnar Edelstein with two guns and a 4 won fairly easily, beating Lee Morrison who finished second by winning a tie-breaker against Bob Monro.

The final results for the top three were:

Sweeney    4, 1, 1 = 6
Morrison   1, 6, 2 = 9
Monro       3, 3, 3 = 9

Next Sunday is our last fleet race of the season. Current standings for the second series can be found by going to http://www.fleet1.org/

Right now, our Guest of the Fleet, Steve Girling is leading the series with Lee Morrison in second and Ed Sweeney in third.

Sonar North American Championships:

The NA's, hosted by Eastern YC in Marblehead will take place this weekend. Racing will begin on Friday and continue through Sunday. There are currently nine teams going from Noroton: Morrison, McArthur, Harrison, Meleney, Doerr, Sinclair, Monro, Galloway and Shapiro.

This year the class has hired a professional coach who will observe and record racing and provide a debrief to competitors as a group and individually after each days racing.

This should be fun.

Team Racing:

Noroton hosted the Kirby Cup team race on 9/11-9/12. Five teams participated, two from Noroton plus Marblehead, Seawanhaka and New York YC.

In typical Long Island Sound fashion, we had everything from a race abandoned for lack of wind on Saturday to racing called for too much wind on Sunday. In the end, we completed two round robins. The Marblehead team, lead by Larry Ehrhardt (below right) displaying tremendous consistency and TR skill, won every race they sailed and took home the trophy.

Final results were as follows:

Marblehead 10 points
Noroton 1    6
NYYC         4
Seawanhaka  3.5
Noroton 2    1.5

Congratulations Marblehead!

Upcoming Calendar:

Friday October 1 - Club Awards Night will be held on  Friday Oct 1 at 7pm. BYOB with appetizers courtesy of Kitty Brown. In addition to the Club Awards we will have a slide show from Club Cruise to Maine. Please RSVP on the NYC Website.

Fleet Racing (aka The Scott Harrison Show):

Sunday August 29:

A beautiful LIS Sunday. With a light breeze out of the WSW, PRO Paul Norton was able to run three races.

Scott Harrison, and his crew of (l to r below) Warren Costikyan, Scott, Johanna Giovanniello (what, no "u"!) and Adam Westerman, with finishes of 4, 1, 2, took the day beating Lee Morrison with finishes of 3, 3, 1 in a tie-breaker for first. Third went to our Guest of the Fleet Steve Girling who also won a tie-breaker over Ed Sweeney.

Labor Day Series:

Day one of our Labor Day series was nothing short of awesome! PRO Jim Bishop started our first race, a D2, in 18 kts out of the west. After that, things settled down a little. The breeze continued out of the west but dropped to 12 kts for the next two races, also D2's.

Day two was more of a struggle. After a postponement, PRO Tony Allott was able to get one D1 race off when the breeze hit 6 kts out of the south.

In the end, (cut and paste from 8/29) Scott Harrison, with finishes of 1, 6, 1, 7 beat Lee Morrison's 5, 1, 7, 2 in a tie-breaker for first place. Third went to Peter Galloway with a 6, 3, 5, 4.

Scott's crew for the first day was Adam (as always) with Chris Zaleski and Marek Zaleski. For day 2, Scott had Warren Costikyan back on-board.

Two important notes: Due to Noroton's hosting of the Kirby Cup team race on September 11 - 12, there will be no fleet racing on 9/12.

Also, due to a light response, we will not have fleet racing on 10/3. With that, there are only two days of fleet racing left for the season, 9/19 and 9/26.

Team Racing:

As mentioned, Noroton is hosting the Kirby Cup team race this weekend, 9/11-12. There are five teams registered. Two from Noroton plus Seawanhaka, New York YC, and a team from Marblehead, MA.

Preparations are well underway. The sonars, which have been generously donated by fleet 1 members have all been equalized and are ready to be launched Saturday morning, the Umpires and RC are set, Kitty has the food order – we’re in great shape.

Where we can use some help…

Saturday morning launching – starting at 7:30AM.  We have to put 13 boats in the water by the 8:30 competitors meeting.

Sunday afternoon hauling – starting around 4PM.  We need to get all the boats out of the water, put on their trailers and rinsed off.

Friday - we need 30 cases (24 bottles/case) of water picked up (Costco) and delivered to Volunteer (its high tide tomorrow at noon).  Lee will be picking up 10 cases today.  If you can help by picking up water for us, please let Lee know (leemail@optonline.net) how many cases you can comfortably handle – to coordinate, he will reply with our remaining balance.

Many hands make light work!

Sonar North American's:

As most of you know, the North American's are taking place in Marblehead on 9/24-9/26. In addition to a great venue, dinners, parties...the usual licentiousness...This year the class has hired a professional coach who will observe and record racing and provide a debrief to competitors as a group and individually after each days racing.

There are currently nine teams going from Noroton...Doerr, Galloway, Harrison, Jayson, McArthur, Meleney, Monro, Morrison and Shapiro. Wish us luck.
