MEMORIAL DAY WEKEND:

Sunday, May 26

Our first day of fleet racing was canceled due to high winds... higher than anyone normally wants to deal with, let alone for the first race of the season.

Gusts in the 30+ range (even topping 40 mph at Norwalk light) and average speeds in the mid to high 20s, RC PRO Michael Rudnick rightfully postponed racing until Monday.

Monday, May 27

Worth the wait. Sunny, wind 10-15... it doesn't get much better. 12 boats made it out to the course including a guest from the Sonar Class' newest fleet, #35 from Nova Scotia, Canada.

PRO Bill Crane ran four races including an "M" and an "F" course.

"Did the RC put the "W" in upside down?"

"I don't think so... Do we have the SI's?"

"I didn't bring them. You?" "Nope" "Nope" "Not me."

"Well, 506 or Lee better have a copy."

After racing was done, our winner for the day, and for the Memorial Day series, with 13 points was Team 506 with Scott Macleod, TK, Kerry Klingler and new member Andrew Lester.

Second went to Team 500 with 16 points. Third was team 619 with 18 points.

CREW TRAINING SEMINAR:

This coming Saturday, June 1, we are holding our 2nd annual crew training seminar. The forecast is for a perfect day...

The seminar begins at 9am. We currently have 26 signed up. We have room for a couple more people but not many so if you are interested, go to the Member's Only area of the club website to sign up or send me an email: 2bruce@optonline.net.

The following Sonar owners have volunteered to take out participants for our on-the-water training session:

McArthur
Harrison
Ross
L. Morrison
Monro
Schultz
Galloway
Kirby
G. Morrison

To the owners who are helping out... please bring one other experienced person with you who can help with training and boat handling.

2013 LONG ISLAND SOUND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our annual regatta has been moved to June 15-16 this year due to the World Championships in September.

We have brought back the same team that ran last year's very successful regatta, including Briggs Tobin as PRO; Peter Wilson as course director and jury member; Dave Sinclair as safety chair and jury member; Palmer Sparkman as official scorer; Jan Raymond for registration and t-shirt design; and of course, Kitty Brown for refreshments, Saturday dinner, snacks, etc.

Participation by Fleet 1 members is critical to convince outside teams to travel here. The regatta is less than 3 weeks away. PLEASE SIGN UP NOW!

The NOR and online registration is available at: http://www.sonar.org/. The NOR is also available from the Noroton website: http://norotonyc.org/

BARBECUES:

Our first fleet barbecue is Sunday June 9. Please plan on staying at the club after racing to enjoy a burger (and whatever else our barbecue volunteer John Schultz has in store for us).

SPRING MEETING NOTES:

Winter is finally over. Before we get into 2013, here is a reminder of what we've been missing:

We had our spring meeting last Sunday. Here's a recap:

Our crew training seminar is scheduled for June 1, 9a-4p. Total class participants depends on how many boats we get to go out for on-the-water training. Right now we have 7 volunteers: Ross, McArthur, Morrison, Monro, Schultz, Galloway and Harrison. We would love to get more boats so if you are around on June 1 and would like to help out, let me know. Sign up for members who want to participate in the seminar is now available online at http://norotonyc.org/ in the Member's Only area.

We have six owners who have volunteered their boats to be in the team race program so we are good to go for our practices. We will need 6 more boats for the Kirby Cup in September. We will be asking for volunteers when the time comes.

As you all know, the Sonar World Championships is being held September 18-22. The regatta will be held in Rochester NY. Our Fleet 1 goal is to send 10+ boats. We know it is a bit of a drive but Rochester YC is known for running outstanding events so it is worth the effort.

Leading up to the Worlds, the SCA has decided to award trophies to the overall best finishers in the four SCA sanctioned events: The Tappan Zee Challenge (May 11-12), The LIS Champs (Noroton, June 15-16), The ACC's (Marblehead, July 26-28) and the New England's (Vineyard Haven, Aug 10-11). To qualify, you need to race in 3 of the 4 events. For fleet 1, the TZC and the LIS are easy. No long drives, no hotels, you don't miss any of our season. If you get those in you only need to race in one of the remaining two. The reality is not many people will qualify so your odds of picking up some silver are pretty good.

We will have three barbecues this summer. Dates are: June 9, July 14 and August 18. Mark your calendars.

Our fleet continues to grow. We have three new boats this year: Michael Aingorn, Greg Danilek and Andy Fisher. We should get multiple weeks with 18+ boats on the line!

Fleet 1 dues is $50. Please send a check, made out to Sonar Fleet 1 (include your name, boat number and partner's names.) to:

Jean Galloway
26 Friendlee La.
Wilton, CT 06897

Just a reminder, fleet 1 dues is separate from SCA membership. SCA membership is required to race in sanctioned regattas.

Dry sail assignments will be finalized prior to the start of the season.

Thanks, we're looking forward to a great season.

Scott and Bruce
