PARA WORLD SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP:

Photo: Jasper vaan Staveren / Delta Lloyd Regatta
Noroton sailor Rick Doerr with Hugh Freund and Brad Kendell (USA) win the gold medal in the Sonar class at the Para World Sailing Championship in Medemblik, The Netherlands.

A real fight to the finish, going into the final race only six points separated the top four boats. In the end, one point behind Team USA, winning the silver was the team of John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Stephen Thomas (GBR). And only one point behind them, the bronze went to the Australian team of Colin Harrison, Jonathan Harris and Russell Boaden.

Doerr commented, “We are so fortunate and blessed to have it go our way because the fleet we sailed against includes some of the best sailors I have ever sailed against. It’s great. It’s tremendous.”

FLEET RACING:

We held our Memorial Day series this past Sunday and Monday. With a light breeze both days, we were lucky to get two races in, one each day.

Many thanks to the race committees with Bill Crane and team on Sunday and Peter Wilson and his team on Monday.

A total of 14 boats made it out racing with 10 on Sunday and 11 Monday. Clean starts and clear air were key.

Sunday Bill ran a D1. With the breeze out of the east and a flood tide boats that stayed to the left did better. Ed Sweeney and team 454, Art Collins, Leo Schlinkert and Justin Scott found the best combination of clear air and pressure to finish first. In a very close finish, second and third went to Team 726 with Michael Aingorn and Bahar Gidwani and team 781 respectively.

Monday we saw the wind out of 205ยบ at about 7 mph at the start. Peter ran a W1 which turned out to be a very good idea given the conditions. About 2/3 the way up, the breeze began to drop (can't drop far from 7, am I right?). Still the fleet made it around the course. At the finish, Scott MacLeod and Team 506... TK, Janet Grapengeter and Michael Rudnick made it around the fastest. Second was Peter Galloway and team Fast Forward. Third was Bruce Kirby and team 633.

For the series...

Michael, Scott, Janet and TK

1st - Team 506 with a total of 6 points
2nd - Lee Morrison and team 619... Susan, Don Vasta and Mark Sullivan, with 8 points
3rd - Michael Aingorn and team 726... Sara R Aingorn, Edward Steinborn, Elizabeth Steinborn and Garin Pace.

ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIP:

This coming weekend, June 4 - 5, Noroton hosts the Sonar Atlantic Coast Championship. Joining us will be a fleet of Vipers as part of Noroton's Spring Regatta. Lots of boats. We highly recommend you don't wait to the last minute to launch as a back up at the hoist is a real possibility.

We currently have 14 Sonars registered. 11 from fleet 1.

We're only 4 days out so please get your team registered. Included in the price of admission:

4 shirts
Chili on Friday evening (for those rigging and launching)
Continental breakfast Saturday and Sunday
After racing snacks
Barbecue Saturday evening
Heineken beer

Awards are given to the entire team of the top three finishers.

Today is the last day to register before the late fee kicks in.

***Parking***
Because the Noroton Bay Association enjoys working with us to make everyone's summer more enjoyable, we have to put a strict parking policy in place. This will apply to all teams racing whether NYC members or not.

Only one car per team will be allowed to park at the club. We will have volunteers on-site checking all vehicles entering the property so the chances of any team parking two cars at the club are low. PLEASE CAR POOL. You can leave your extra cars at a friend's house, at Weed beach (if you have a sticker), or at Hindley School which is at the corner of the Post Rd and Nearwater lane.

Also, please remember the people checking vehicles are volunteers. Be nice.

You can download the NOR HERE.

TEAM RACING:

The Noroton team race program has become an important part of the club. Sailors of all skill levels are encouraged to give it a try. There are a number of ways to get involved including fun racing on Tuesday evenings in Ideals for those just learning or Thursday evening and Saturday morning practice in Sonars for any level of experience.

Please contact Scott MacLeod if you are interested in getting involved.

Okay. you've made it this far, here's a great video from last year showing why you are never out of contention when racing.

On a really light air day, watch closely as 619, coming into the mark in 6th, finishes rounding in 2nd (music added to drown out audio from the other boats... just kidding).
