SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday June 26:

The breeze was really unpredictable yesterday. PRO Commodore Basil Lyden started us this way:

Commodores Randy Tankoos and Basil Lyden sound the AP

Thankfully the AP came down at 0103 at which point 13 boats launched, rigged and made it to the race course by 0203's (first) warning gun.

Commodore Lyden started us on a D2 with the breeze about 8 out of the east. About halfway through the race, with all boats on the first run, the wind died. Ugh.

Slowly the wind filled in from Long Island, allowing us to complete a shortened course.

Here's how Sheffield Light recorded the breeze:

Team Jager #690, managed the conditions best in race one taking the gun. Jager was followed by Team 506 with third going to team 605.

Race 2 was a D1. The breeze from LI had picked up slightly and was now back to 7-8. While going left may have been slightly favored, by the windward mark the fleet was together.

Team 506 recovered from their disaster in race one by taking the gun. They were followed by Team 454, who really did recover from a "tough call" OCS in race 1.  Team 454 was Commodore Ed Sweeney, Commodore Peggy Hersam, Alec Wiggin and Rear Commodore Leo Schlinkert. Third went to Team 619 with Commodore Lee Morrison, Susan Morrison, Mark Sullivan and Don Vasta.

Time for one more W1 sprint. Once again team 506 finished first, followed this time by Team 654 with Morgan Connor, Jan Raymond, Mike Kuras and Brit Bischoff. Third went to Team 605.

We were able to give out our first set of weekly First Place glasses this week, going to Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK and Paul Barringer.

Second place for the day went to Team 605: Bob Monro, Ian Monro, Janet Grapengeter, Michael Rudnick and Tatiana Dunbar-Hall.

Third was Team 690 with John Bainton, Gregg Delany, PD Duncan and KC Hart

That's right, all races on Monday will count towards the Commodore's Race Day trophy. Trophies for the weekend series will be handed out at the end of racing on Monday. SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday June 19:

Okay, we're not moving to Newport... yet.

Finally a beautiful day for racing. A fleet of 13 sonars sailed out to the race course in an easterly with wind in the 11 mph range. Today was the Vice Commodore's race day so fleets of cruising boats, vipers and Ideal 18's enjoyed the perfect racing weather too.

Vice Commodore and PRO Tom Ross sent the Sonars on a D2 to start the day. Finding an advantage, right or left, was a tough call but team 506 managed to figure it out and made it around the 4 mile course in about 50 minutes. Nipping at their transom was Team 454 with Ed Sweeney, Art Collins, Patrick Collins and Alec Wiggin, who also had blazing fast speed. Third went to Team 605 with Bob Monro, Ian Monro, Janet Grapengeter, Michael Rudnick and Jane Collins.

Next was a D1 which was the right call as the wind dropped to about 8 mph for a good chunk of the race. Once again 506 got the gun giving them their second bullet for the day. But this time they were followed closely by team Jager with John Bainton, Gregg Delany and Ollie Schultz. Jager was in the hunt the entire race. Third in race 2 was team 500 with Bill Jayson, Randy Tankoos, Grant Tankoos and Andrea Kostanecki.

Final overall for the day...

Team 506: Scott MacLeod, Paul Barringer and TK

1st - Team 506 with 2 points
2nd - Team 690 with 7 points (winning the tie breaker)
3rd - Team 605 also with 7 points.

SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

This past weekend, Noroton YC hosted the Sonar Atlantic Coast Championships. Adding to the fun, Noroton also hosted a regatta for the Viper class.

For the Sonars, 19 boats registered, 18 raced.

Sadly, racing was called off Saturday for no wind. After hoping and waiting for the breeze for four hours, it became too apparent it wasn't going to happen so PRO Paul Norton raised the AP over A and called it a day.

Still the day was not a total loss, the competitors and friends were treated to a terrific evening barbecue put on by Kitty Brown and her staff at the club.

Knit 1, purl 2

Sunday was a different story. Cloudy and rainy conditions greeted the fleet with a breeze that ranged from lulls around 5-6 mph to puffs in the 13-14 range. Also difficult conditions for the RC as the easterly came in with 20ยบ+ shifts. In fact, the first race became close to a beam reach parade.

Still the RC got in four races for the Sonars (5 for the Vipers) before sending the fleet in.

Racing was very tight with position changes after every race. So tight that, in the end, only five points separated 4th - 10th place.

After all was said and done, winning the regatta with just 7 points was Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK, Chris Daley and Paula Tabeschek.

Chris, Scott, Paula and TK

Second, with 18 points, went to Team 605 with Bob Monro, Janet Grapengeter, Michael Rudnick and Scott Brooks.

Third with 26 points was Team 454 with Jim Crane, Ed Sweeney, Leo Schlinkert and Alec Wiggin.

Complete standings can be found on the club website at:
http://norotonyc.org/ -> Regatta Info and Results.

We'd like to give a special thanks to Heineken Beer and Rondar Raceboats for their donations to the regatta.

Next week we return to club fleet racing.

On another note...

The conquering hero returns to Noroton.

Fresh off his gold medal in the Para World Championship in Medemblik, The Netherlands, Rick Doerr came by the club to show off his award. He received a warm welcome from those who saw him, including Commodore Peggy Hersam.
