KIRBY CUP:

Noroton YC hosted the 2011 Kirby Cup team race this past weekend. Five teams participated, Eastern YC, New York YC, Noroton YC, Texas Corinthian YC and Vineyard Haven.

We could not have asked for better weather. Saturday saw sunny skies with wind out of the east beginning at 10 knots then dropping off the charts but not before we completed two round robins. Sunday was even better with the easterly building to 11-18.

Racing was very competitive with very even teams. After day one, NYYC, Eastern, and Texas were within 2 points of each other followed closely by Noroton and Vineyard Haven.

On Sunday, after another two round robins, NYYC finally got a little breathing room and won the regatta by a comfortable 3 points. Second was Eastern followed by Texas only 3/4 point behind. Fourth went to Noroton and fifth was Vineyard Haven.

Wes Whitmyer and his entire RC did a fantastic job keeping us on the race course while Peter Wilson and the umpires kept us honest while we were out there (well, for the most part).

All the volunteers who helped out for this event are the reason we received comments like:

Thank you for running a terrific regatta. Noroton is made of some very good sailors with terrific hospitality. We appreciate all the work you and all of your volunteers put into making the event so enjoyable. The boat owners deserve a huge thank you as well. Please extend our appreciation.  You even conjured up some of the best of Long Island Sound Sailing for Sunday! That was awesome!  We will look forward to seeing you and the Noroton team again.

Okay, for those who can stand my shaking hand, a short video of Kirby Cup action. Check out the trap White puts on Blue at the windward mark, converting a 1, 3 into a 1, 2...

FLEET RACING:

No racing last weekend. Our last fleet race before the Atlantic Coast Championships is this Sunday, September 25.

NORTH AMERICANS:

The North American Championships are being held this Friday-Sunday, hosted by the Wayzata YC in Minnesota. Team Fast Forward will be there representing Noroton. Wish them luck.

ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Noroton is hosting the ACC's Sat-Sun, October 1-2. If you plan to race, get your registration in before this Sunday to avoid a late charge.

I am looking for a big turn-out from Fleet 1.

Registration is $225 and includes four long sleeve tee's, chili on Friday evening for those who want to avoid the rush and launch. Continental breakfast Saturday and Sunday, snacks after racing and dinner Saturday night prepared by our own Kitty Brown.

ONE LAST HURRICANE SHOT:

Margo Kirby submitted this picture of hurricane preparation. It's good to know our priorities are in order...

CLOSING CEREMONY:

The Flag Officers and Board of Directors of Noroton YC invite you to attend the Closing Ceremony for the 2011 season. The ceremony will be held on the patio on Sunday October 16 at 1600 hours followed by awarding of our season awards.

FLEET RACING:

Labor Day Series:

Unlike our July 4 series, we were able to actually race Labor Day weekend. Our two PRO's, Howard Seymour (Sunday) and Steve Shepstone (Monday), ran a combined five races in a good mix of light and medium breeze.

Lee Morrison won the series with a dominating 7 points. His crew included Jim Gleason and Susan both days, Josh Gleason (Sunday) and Doug Bora (Monday). Pictured are Susan, Lee and Doug.

Second went to Ed Sweeney who ended with 16 points...

Second? Maybe I'll just do RC next week!

Third was Peter Galloway and Jim Linville with 20.

Sunday September 11...

What a beautiful day. One of the best for racing so far. With a nice easterly at around 11-13 kts, Ed Sweeney, our PRO ran two W2's and a D1. As a last minute replacement, Ed did a great job keeping us on the race course with very little down time between races.

Racing was really close this time (Lee couldn't make it...See Labor Day results). At the end of the day, our winner was a tweaked Team 500 with (l to R) Randy Tankoos, Grant Tankoos, Gillian Jayson and Commodore Jayson.

How come they only win when Gillian is on board?

Right there, coming in second by losing a tie-breaker to Team 500, was Peter Galloway (both finished with 7 points). Third was Scott Harrison with 8 points and fourth was a throw back Team 360 skippered by Craig Sinclair, with 9.

Did I mention it was close?

SONAR WORLDS:

The Sonar World Championships took place on August 24-27, hosted by the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club in Rhu, Scotland. Conditions were very challenging with 180ยบ shifts in several races.

I'm happy to report Noroton's own Steve Shepstone brought the trophy home and is now the Sonar world champion!

Another Noroton boat performed extremely well. Bruce Kirby and crew finished fifth in the European Championships. Unfortunately, Bruce wasn't able to race in the Worlds, he broke his arm in a fall, but his crew raced with replacement skipper Scott Mcleod and finished third!

Great job guys.

KIRBY CUP:

There will be no fleet racing this coming weekend, Sep. 17-18 because Noroton will be hosting the Kirby Cup team race over these two days.

The six teams competing this year are: Noroton, Eastern, New York, Seawanhaka Corinthian, Vineyard Haven and Texas Corinthian.

All clubs are very competitive so it should be an exciting weekend of racing.

IRENE:

Dave Sinclair took a couple of pictures in the aftermath if Irene wich I thought I would share with you. We wouldn't want to forget what a great job Jeff and his guys did cleaning up...

ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Noroton is hosting the 2011 Atlantic Coast Championships on October 1-2. We all know how sailing can be on Long Island Sound this time of year so we are looking forward to two terrific days of racing to end the season.

Included in the registration fee is a chili dinner for those who launch on Friday evening.
