Fleet Racing Sunday July 25:

Even with the threat of afternoon thunder storms, we were able to get 12 boats on-the-line this past Sunday. With a very light breeze to take us out, we worried we might not make it to the course by the start of the race.

Our PRO for the day, Howard Vickery decided we should begin with a D1.

At the start, the wind had picked up enough to make for a nice race. A bit of a lefty came through so most of the fleet tacked onto port at the start. About half-way up, with the fleet fairly split, the wind began to go right. Then it went further right, then still further right. By the time it was done, we had close to a 90ยบ shift!

In the end the Raymonds, with Joshua at the helm, won the race. Second went to Lee Morrison and in third was Rick Doerr.

With Joshua, was (pictured l to r) Chip Raymond, Joshua and Jan Raymond. Also on board but not picture was Gavin Watson.

After the first race, with a severe thunder storm on the radar, we decided to play it safe and ended racing for the day.

Fleet 1 series 1:

This race was also the final race of the first series. According to http://www.fleet1.org/our winner for the first series is Ed Sweeney with Lee Morrison in second and Peter Galloway in third.

Marblehead NOOD and ACC's:

Last weekend four of our fleet members, Peter Galloway, Scott Harrison, Bob Monro and Zach Shapiro hitched up their boats and drove to Marblehead to participate in the NOOD regatta which was also the Sonar Atlantic Coast Championships. Racing for the NOOD took place Friday-Sunday while only the races on Saturday and Sunday counted for the ACC's.

At the end of the day, with 25 boats competing, Peter Galloway finished 4th overall and 2nd for the ACC's. Scott Harrison finished 8th overall and 6th in the ACC's while Bob Monro ended 10th but 5th in the ACC's, winning a tie-breaker with Scott. Zach Shapiro finished 14th overall.

Fleet 1 Barbecue:

How do you barbecue lasagna? We'll find out this Sunday August 1 at 1730 hours!

As a point of clarification, and because I forgot who my audience is...i.e. ruthless, manipulative and hungry type A's willing to take advantage of any gesture of kindness, no matter how small :-)...the "free" dinner for fleet members will be limited to a max of 4 tickets per boat and are exclusive to the fleet member and their immediate family. Crew, other club members and guests are invited and will be charged $12 for adults and $6 for children under 10.

Team Racing:

Noroton will be participating in two team racing events in August. Both are taking place at New York YC in Newport. The first is the Grand Masters Invitational on August 7-8. Racing for NYC will be:
Bill Jayson, Warren Costikyan and Basil Lyden
Ed Sweeney, Art Collins and Le Morrison
Peter Wilson, Peter Galloway, Jim Linville and Carolyn Wilson

The second will be the Hinman Masters on August 20-22. For Noroton we have:
TK, Paul Barringer, Britt Hall and Kevin Sheehan
Lee Morrison, Susan Morrison, Don Vasta and Karl Ziegler
Steve Shepstone, Jim Linville, Kari Roberts and Melissa Shepstone

Our teams have been out practicing quite a bit the past couple of months so we have high hopes for a great showing.

Finally, coming up on September 11-12, Noroton will be hosting the Kirby Cup team race. After successfully hosting this event last year, Fleet 1 and Noroton received approval from the Sonar Class Association to change the Kirby Cup Deed of Gift to allow us to run this event annually and become the Kirby Cup's home venue.

Upcoming Sonar Calendar:

Sunday August 1 - Let's Have a Barbecue! Hang out after racing for our first barbecue of the season.
Friday August 6-Sunday August 8 -  New England Championships at Vineyard Haven YC

Sunday July 18:

Well it doesn't get much better than last Sunday. Winds 8-12 out of the west...well some of the time.  We were able to get in three races thanks to PRO John Geissinger and his RC.

The first race was the Vice Commodore's race. John sent us on a D-2 with 13 boats starting. Scott Harrison took up where he left off the week before by taking the gun in this race. He was followed closely by the Cranes with Bob Monro coming in third.

The rest of the day also belonged to Scott, finishing the next two races with a 2 and 1 giving him 4 points overall. Second place belonged to Ed Sweeney with finishes of 5, 1 and 3. Third was Bob Monro with a 3, 3 and 6.

Scott has been sailing really well the last two weeks taking 4 guns in 6 races! His crew for this week were (pictured top to bottom) Adam Westerman, Scott and Warren Costikyan.

This will be free, that's right, you heard me, free for fleet members and their families. Non-fleet members will be $12 for adults and $6 for children under 10.

All are welcome.

Noroton YC Fleet Racing:

July 4th Series:

Somehow we managed to get five races in between Sunday and Monday, July 4th and 5th. Very light, shifty conditions made racing...fun. Still, we had 12 boats racing on Sunday and 15 boats on Monday.

Our first race on Sunday was the Commodore's Race. The winner for that race was Team 500 including Commodore Jayson, Commodore Lyden and Rear Commodore Tankoos. Funny how that worked. Led wire to wire. Second was Lee Morrison, third was Commodore Jim Linville.

Jim Linville was able to take the gun in race 2, finishing in first place with a combined 4 for day 1.

Day two of the series saw slightly more pressure but nothing to write in newsletters about. Jim Linville continued to dominate with finishes of 1, 2, 1, giving him a two day total, including one throw-out, of a 5. Jim was joined by Paul Steinborn (pictured at left) and Peter Galloway.

Second place for the series was Ed Sweeney, with 10 points. Third place was decided in a tie breaker between Bob Monro and Lee Morrison each with 14 points. Bob won the tie breaker with two second place finishes.

Many thanks to the race committees, PRO Art Collins on July 4 and PRO Warren Costikyan on July 5.

Sunday July 11:

The summer on LIS continued with light but better than expected conditions. PRO Bill Jayson and his race committee did a great job getting three races in.

With 13 boats racing, Scott Harrison won the day with finishes of 1, 5, 1. Scott was joined by (pictured l to r below) Leo Schlinkert, Kelsey Harrison, Adam Westerman and Scott.

The top three for the day were:

Harrison   1, 5, 1 = 7
Galloway  2, 7, 3 = 12
Morrison  9, 2, 2 = 13
Sweeney   3, 4, 6 = 13
