Noroton YC

Team Racing:

This past weekend Noroton won the Hinman Masters team race championship.  Along with our Grand Masters win two weeks ago, Noroton’s teams have now won 2 of the 3 big team race championships that have become the pinnacle of keel boat team racing in the United States.  Twelve teams competed in the Hinman this year.

In atypical Newport weather the event started with two days of light, and at times, calm winds followed by heavy wind and rain on the last day.  In this year’s championship, the winner was not determined until the last race of the final series.  In total 34 flights were sailed with each flight consisting of 3 races.

After the first round robin of racing - which was used to qualify the teams into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets - Noroton was tied with Eastern YC.  Both clubs had won 10 of 11 qualifying races.  However, as Noroton beat Eastern in this first series we held the top spot in the Gold championship fleet.  The other teams in the Gold fleet were Larchmont with 8 points and Southern with 7.  These top four teams sailed two mini round robin series among themselves.  After the first set of championship races there was little movement in positions as both Eastern and Noroton each won 2 races and lost 1.  However, Noroton’s loss to Eastern in this series put Eastern on top by virtue of tie breaking rules.  So, it all came down to the final mini round robin series among the top four teams to determine the championship.

Adding to the excitement both Southern and Larchmont beat Noroton and Eastern in the first two races of the final round.  So, it now came down to the last race between Noroton and Eastern – winner takes all.  Noroton had a good start and held a 1-3-4 on the first reach.  The gusty winds allowed some movement going downwind but Noroton held its narrow lead at the start of the final leg.  Eastern worked hard to push our 3rd and 4th place boats back and succeeded in passing our 4th place boat.  But, with Noroton in first and an Eastern boat in last we were able to win the race and series by the narrowest of margins.

Your Noroton Hinman Masters Championship team consisted of Paul Barringer, Britt Hall, Tom Kinney, Jim Linville, Lee and Susan Morrison, Kari Roberts, Kevin Sheehan, Steve and Melissa Shepstone, Don Vasta, and Karl Zeigler.

The Hinman Masters Team Race Championship is held annually by the New York Yacht Club at its Harbour Court facility in Newport RI.  In order to accommodate racing among the 12 competing teams we competed in both Sonars and J/22s.  In addition to the Gold fleet teams mentioned above, the New York Yacht Club, Annapolis YC, Boston YC, Royal Thames YC, Seawanhaka YC, Texas Corinthian YC, St Francis YC, and a combined team of Storm Trysail/Ida Lewis YC also competed.

August 15, 2010

Ugh...why did I wait so long to write this. I can barely remember what happened yesterday. Let's see...I do remember our Guests of the Fleet (l to r below) Jeff Merz, Steve Girling and Jonathan Nye from Indian Harbor completely dominated racing that day.

With finishes of 1, 2, 1 they ended well ahead of Lee Morrison who finished second with a 5, 1, 3 and Ed Sweeney, third with a 2, 3, 5.

And of course, many thanks to our PRO/sails rep/tactician Peter Galloway and his RC for getting in three great races.

August 22, 2010:

Racing yesterday was, in a word, awesome! Our first race began with cloudy skies and wind out of the SE at 12 kts. Our PRO Scott Harrison decided to send the fleet on a W2. In the end, Gary Coventry came out on top followed by Ed Sweeney and Steve Girling. Race two was also a W2 but by this point the wind was building to 20! Showing great consistency, Ed Sweeney made his adjustments and was able to win this race. Rick Doerr finished second and Steve Girling third. Our overall winner for the day was (l to r) Alec Wiggin, Bill Thomson, Ed Sweeney and Alan DeSantis.

Second place went to Rick Doerr with finishes of 4, 2 and third was Steve Girling with a 3, 3.

Fleet Racing Sunday August 8:

EXTRA, EXTRA Late Edition Final
HELL FREEZES OVER!!!

Our first race of the day was the Rear Commodore's Race. Bobbing around during a postponement for lack of wind, there was a point we were not sure the race was going to happen. After a 45 minute delay, the breeze started to fill in....slightly. Our PRO and Rear Commodore, Randy Tankoos decided to give it a try when we began to see 5 knots out of the east so he sent us off on a W1.

Now for the really amazing part...

With a near perfect start, nearly flawless tactics and boat handling :-), the team of (left to right below) Joe Duwan, Yours Truly, and Geoff Durno won! They...we...I'm so confused...finished just ahead of the Monros with Julia at helm and a younger and much better looking Team 500 with Will Graves, Gillian Jayson and Cathy Hoyt.

As the first race was ending, we saw a big shift to the south with the wind picking up to 11-13! How great is that? Randy was able to get two more races in, a D1 and a W1. In the end, our overall winners were the Monro's with Julia and Ian (pictured below) and a little help from their crew of Bob and Fran. They won the day with finishes of 2, 3, 2. Second went to McArthur with a 1, 5, 3 while third went to Graves with 4, 2, 4.

Team Racing:

Last weekend a team from Noroton participated in the Grand Masters Invitational team race hosted by New York Yacht Club in Newport, RI and sailed in Sonars. Other teams included Southern YC, American YC, St. Francis YC and St. Pete's.

Our team consisted of:

Bill Jayson, Warren Costikyan and Basil Lyden
Ed Sweeney, Art Collins and Lee Morrison
Peter Wilson, Peter Galloway, Jim Linville and Carolyn Wilson

At the end of a weekend of racing which included completing three round-robins plus a championship round-robin, Noroton came out on top by winning 15 of 18 races over all!

Second place went to NYYC, 4 points behind Noroton. Third was American, 8 points back. Here are the complete results (click on to enlarge):

Fleet Racing, Sunday August 1:

Sunday was one of those days where it didn't matter how you finished. It was just great being out on the water. Good thing to because Scott Harrison, back from Marblehead, took up where he left off by winning two of three races and getting a second in the other race. He easily won the day, beating second place finisher Lee Morrison's 2, 1, 4. And third? Well frankly, third was so far back it is not worth mentioning.

We had 12 boats on the line. The start of race 1 had a breeze out of the east at around 14 kts, then lightening to about 9-10 for the next two races. Add in some chop due to the adverse current, and you can really appreciate Scott's consistency. Of course, Scott doesn't do it alone. His crew of Warren Costikyan (left) and Adam Westerman (right) may have helped a little :)

PRO Kevin Sheehan and his RC did a great job running a D2, D1 and a W2 to finish us up.
