SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

LABOR DAY SERIES...

Sunday September 4:

While the club flew the storm warning signal flag (A warning of sustained surface winds, or frequent gusts, in the range of 48 knots (55 mph) to 63 knots (73 mph) inclusive, either predicted or occurring, and not directly associated with a tropical cyclone), a fleet of seven Sonars went out to race and discovered a breeze of 11 mph out of the east.

PRO Bruce McArthur and his RC ran two D2's. The first with a windward leg of .9 miles, the second with a .75 mile windward leg.

At the end of the day, we had a 5-way tie for first place, each boat with six points. This is how the top five boats finished:

Team 605 (Bob Monro, Fran Monro, Janet Grapengeter, Michael Rudnick and Kevin Marks) 5, 1
Team 633 (Bruce Kirby, Howard Seymour, Kurt Altman and Britt Hall) 1, 5
Team 506 (Scott MacLeod, Chris Daley, Peggy Hersam and TK) 4, 2
Team 619 (Lee Morrison, Susan Morrison, Mark Sullivan and Don Vasta) 2, 4
Team 690 (John Bainton, Oliver Schulz, Gregg Delany and Court Crane) 3, 3

And, with the tie breakers, the above is how they are sitting after the first day of racing.

Monday September 5:

A bit of a rough start for racing on Labor Day. Wind out of the north (median direction was 20º) gusting into the 20's. Unfortunately, Volunteer had a very difficult time getting the anchor to hold.

We started with 10 Sonars and 3 Ideals. Almost 45 minutes later, and after 3 Sonars and one Ideal retired, we were able to start our first of two races, a W2.

In the end, Team 506 got the gun, followed by Team 690 (Will Christenson replaced Oliver Schulz on  690 on Monday).

At press time third place has not been determined as a request for redress is pending.

In race two, a W1 1/2, the first two place finishers were identical with 506 taking the gun followed by 690. In this race third place went to Team Jack (633).

For the series, after four races...

1st - Team 506 with 8 points
2nd - Team 690 with 10 points
3rd - Team 633 (regardless of the outcome of the request for redress)

Team 506: Scott MacLeod, TK, Peggy Hersam and Chris Daley

SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday August 21:

This report from PRO Scott Harrison (with some input from Bahar Gidwani) comes to you from from beautiful Hinesburg, VT....

PRO, Scott Harrison, along with Ed Hogan and Elie and Mike Devlin set up 1 D2 and two D1's.

On pin boat we had Peter Scholtz and Griffin (9) and Doug Wilson:

Mark boat was Pete Wheelock and Caroline Murray:

The wind was ranging from 175-200 at 7-10 knots
High tide was at 2:14, so not too bad

The first race, the D2, was too long, so we shortened it at the top of the second windward leg. On the second upwind leg, there was a big shift right.  The three boats that went right made out and crossed the boats that went left.

The Committee boat was struggling to stay anchored so the finish line slowly widened and made the finish heavily boat favored.

The PRO got smarter and ran two more D1's.

The breeze was shifting some and moving right with velocity up and down. The first leg of the third race ended with another right shift in place.  Those who could jibe immediately after rounding and head left (781 and 726) made out while those who had to sail a bit right first, ended sailing extra distance.

In the end, team Horden (781) took the day with 5 points, team 619 was second with 8 points and team Jager (690) was third with 10 points.

The results after three races:

First place with just 5 points was Team Horden (781) with Bahar Gidwani, Yalcin Tarhan, Siofra Potash and Eva Burpee
Second Place with 8 points was Team 619 with Lee Morrison, Susan Morrison, Don Vasta and Mark Sullivan.
Third place with 10 points was Team Jager (690) with John Bainton, Gregg Delany and Hale Holden.

TEAM RACING:

This past weekend, Noroton Yacht Club defended its title by winning the Hinman Masters Team race, hosted by the New York Yacht Club.

The race, which included nine clubs from around the country, is one to the most prestigious master level events in the US.

The Noroton team:

Scott MacLeod (skipper, team captain) with Michael Rudnick, Peggy Hersam and Basil Lyden.
Karl Ziegler (skipper) with Chris Daley, Janet Grapengeter and Bill Crane.
Tom Kinney (skipper) with Britt Hall, Howard Seymour and Kevin Sheehan.

A nice write up of the event can be found in Scuttlebutt

This coming weekend is the Grand Masters, also in Harbor Court. This is an event Noroton has never lost (no pressure, just remember, second place is really the first loser!)

SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday August 14:

As Buster Poindexter so aptly put it... Hot Hot Hot.

But there was a breeze. 8-10 out of the southwest, then moving to the west. PRO Lee Morrison and the RC ran three races, a D2 then two D1's.

10 boats raced, including one visitor from Seawanhaka, Eric Johnson.

Today we saw a great battle between Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK and Chris Daley and Team Jager (690) with John Bainton, Gregg Delany and Keith Werner. Each boat working hard to scratch out a win.

In the first race, protecting the right and playing the shifts were key. In the end, Team 506 finished first with Team Jager in Second. Third was our guest, Eric Johnson in 570.

In race two, a D1, Team Jager pulled off the win with Team 506 finishing second. Third was Team 726 with Paul Steinborn Jr, Ed Steinborn, Peter Wermuth and teammate Jeff.

Our final race, also a D1, saw lead changes between Jager and 506 but in the end, Team 506 prevailed with the win. Jager was second and, once again, Team 726 was third.

For the day:

1st - 506 with 4 points
2nd - Jager with 5 points
3rd - Team 605 with 12 points (three 4th place finishes. Team: Bob Monro, Francesca Monro, Ian Monro, Glenn Morrison and Allyson Schultz)
4th - Team 726 with 15 points (we bet they'd like that first race back!)

Team 506: Scott MacLeod, Chris Daley and TK

***Our last day of racing has been extended to Sunday September 25. If you are preparing to sail in the Sonar North Americans, you may keep your Sonar in the drysail area until that following weekend.  If not, please make arrangements to take your boat off the premises or move to the parking lot (under Jeff's management.)

A quick note from Bruce Kirby...

In case you didn't know - I have not been sailing for the past month because I have had a very painful back injury. About a week ago it was discovered that I had a substantial crack in a vertebrae that was making it very difficult for me to get in and out of bed, let alone go out on the Sound and beat the youngsters in the Sonar fleet.

Last week I had very up to date surgery to insert a type of glue into the fracture and stabilize the situation.  It was immediate relief from the main source of pain and today I am walking almost normally and expect the residual pains and aches to gradually dissipate in the next few days. Tremendous relief physically and psychologically. I will be taking it very easy for a while but hope to get to the club on Sunday to see the kiddies off.  If all goes well I will be able to sail again this season.

We all wish Bruce a speedy and full recovery.

REGATTAS:

Last week the Sonar Canadian Nationals were held as part of Chester Race week. The US Paralympic team of Rick Doerr from Noroton YC, Hugh Freund and Brad Kendell joined by Mike Ingham finished in second overall.

Congratulations!

SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday, August 7:

A beautiful day for racing for the 10 teams that made it out to the course. PRO Lianna Gordon and the RC had their hands full with big shifts, including one that was 75º while we were in our sequence for race two.

Lianna ran three races, two D1's and a D2. We had a nice breeze in the 8-10 range for the first two races, then a little up and down, mostly down, for race three.

With a shorter than usual starting line, finding a spot and clear air at the start was really important (when isn't it?). Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK, Peggy Hersam and Katie Morgan found it (when don't they?) and lead the fleet around the course finishing first. Second was Team Fast Forward (701) with Paul Steinborn Sr., Paul Steinborn Jr., Peter Galloway and Connor Brady. Third was Team 501 with Michael Rudnick, Janet Gapengeter, Megan Gapengeter-Rudnick and James Barry.

In race two 506 finished first once again but this time they were followed by Team Horden (781) with Bahar Gidwani, Yalcin Tarhan, Eva Burpee and Tony Ramos. Third went to Team 619 with Lee Morrison, Susan Morrison, Don Vasta and Mark Sullivan.

Race three, our D2, was challenging with big lulls, nice puffs and some substantial shifts. None of that phased team 506 who finished first once again.  In this race, Team 654 with Morgan Connor, Britt Bishoff, Jan Raymond, Craig Jones and tactician Wells Connor (age 8) finished second while Team 501 finished third.

So, for those paying attention, we had 5 different boats finish in second or third in three races.

Overall for the day:

1st - 506 with 3 points
2nd - 501 with 11 points
3rd - 701 with 13 points (winning the tie breaker against 619)

Team 506: TK, Katie Morgan and Scott MacLeod. Missing is Peggy Hersam

SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday July 31:

Wind at Sheffield Island

YEEE HAAAA! was heard throughout the day. Despite a rather gloomy forecast, Sunday turned into a great day and a wild ride for the boats that made it to the starting line. As it was both the Rear Commodore's race day, and the Norwalk YC/Noroton YC inter-club challenge, fleets of cruising boats, Vipers, Sonars and Ideal 18's raced. PRO Kevin Sheehan, joined by Rear Commodore Leo Schlinkert, sent the big boats off first then ran two W2's for the one design fleets.

For the Sonars, eight boats started in the first race. Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK, Chris Daley and Paula Tabeschek set the tone with a commanding win. Second was Team 605 with Bob Monro, Francesca Monro, Ian Monro, Janet Grapengeter and Michael Rudnick.  Third was Team Horden (781) with Bahar Gidwani, Yalcin Tarhan, Eva Burpee and Tom Speyer.

Another thing heard on the course was "LOOK OUT!" Team Vespa (756) had an unexpected equipment malfunction in the first race...

Thankfully no one was hurt and they now have a great story to tell over beers on the patio...

Team Vespa: David Orner, Ed Infurna and Willem Sutherland, none the worse for wear (unlike their mast). Evelyn Infurna who was also out racing on Vespa is missing from this shot.
Race 2 saw more of the same... big waves, lots of breeze and another win by Team 506. In this race Team Horden finished second and Team 654 with Morgan Connor, Craig jones, Jan Raymond and Mike Kuras came in third.

The overall winner for the day and the Rear Commodore's race trophy was Team 506 with just 2 points.Team Horden finished second with 5 points while Team 605 finished third with 7.

Team 506: Scott MacLeod, Paula Tabeschek, Chris Daley and TK.
