SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Memorial Day Series:

The start of the 2014 racing season couldn't have come soon enough for us.

The Memorial Day series was raced on Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26. Jim Crane was PRO for Sunday and was able to get three D1 races completed in a light breeze out of the SW. 10 boats made it to the starting line. At the end of the day, three boats were within 1 point of each other. Lee Morrison and Team 619 was leading with 7 points, including two bullets, while the commodores on Team 500 and Team 726 including Michael Aingorn and Paul Steinborn Jr. were nipping at Lee's transom with eight points each.

Team 619

Monday had a better turn-out with 16 boats racing in similar conditions, a light SW breeze. Sunday's PRO was Geoff Durno. He also completed three races, a D2 and two D1.

With six races completed, the SI's allowed a throw-out. In the end, with just 10 points the winner of the Memorial Day Series was Team 500.

Team 500: Randy Tankoos, Bill Jayson, Kate and Basil Lyden

Second place went to Lee Morrison with 18 points. Lee won a tie breaker over Bob Monro on the strength of his two guns, giving Bob third.

Sunday June 1:

11 boats came out to race in very light air, still out of the SW. PRO Randy Tankoos was able to get one D1 in before the wind died and racing was called off.

Too bad we don't have any shots of the leeward rounding in that race as all competitors converged on that mark at the same time.

Peter Galloway and team Fast Forward made it around the mark unscathed and finished first for the race. Second went to Morgan Connor who was sailing on 654, while third was taken by Ed Sweeney and team 454.

CREW TRAINING:

Class of 2013 (click to enlarge)
Our third annual crew training seminar is scheduled for this coming Saturday June 7, from 9a-4p. The format will be similar to last year. 9a-12n classroom to discuss the basics of sailing including boat handling and rules. 12n-1p will be lunch (the snack bar will be open or bring your own) and rigging and launching. Then it's on-the-water for some real experience and fun races.

After the seminar we will all enjoy some snacks and drinks on the pier with live music.

There's still plenty of room so if you would like to enjoy a fun day sailing with friends, or you know someone who would like to try Sonar sailing, please register.

SONAR REGATTAS:

The New England Championships is a little over three weeks away. This year's regatta is scheduled for June 28-29 and is hosted by Falmouth Yacht Club in Falmouth MA.  Falmouth is also hosting the 2015 world championship so you might want to consider registering to pick up some local knowledge.
