SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

We held our Fourth of July Series on Sunday and Monday this week.

Sunday July 3:

A beautiful day for racing with wind in the 10-12 range and puffs reaching 15. Fantastic.

14 Sonars made it out to the starting line. PRO Chris Zaleski (we need to get him racing on a Sonar) and the RC did a great job running three races.

Race one was a D2. Team Fast Forward, with Paul Steinborn Sr, Paul Jr., Dani Havi and Ronan Flynn lived up to their Fast Forward name by taking the gun. They were followed by Team 605 with Bob Monro, Francesca Monro, Ian Monro, Janet Grapengeter and Michael Rudnick. Third went to Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK and Kerry Klingler.

Race two was a D2. In this race Team 605 took the gun with 506 coming in second. However, in a change from the usual script, Team 375 with T.J. Danilek at the helm, joined by proud parents Greg and Beth Danilek, finished third.

Race three was a W 1 1/2. Team 506 took the gun in this race. Second went to team 654 with Morgan Connor, Lila Connor (age 6), Jan Raymond, Gavin Watson and Neil Meyer. Third was Team Horden with Bahar Gidwani, Tony Ramos, Siofra Potash and Yalcin Tarhan

So, for the three races, six different boats finished in the top three. Only two boats finished in the top three more than once (605 and 506) and only 506 accomplished this in all three races.

Monday July 4:

Another nice day starting with a SW breeze around 10 mph which diminished to 5 before coming back from the south at 10.

July 4 was the Commodore's Race day (also known by some as Independence Day). Our PRO was Commodore Peggy Hersam who ran two W2's.

The first race saw a fairly typical scenario with the usual suspects leading at the first leeward mark. While many decided to go right and stay out of the current, some others went left for what looked like more wind. The boats that went left made the correct decision as the southerly came in giving them a nice advantage.

In the end, winning the race was Team Fast Forward, this time with Paul Steinborn Sr., Ed Steinborn, Cooper Pellaton and Ronan Flynn. Fast forward was followed by Team 619 with Lee Morrison, Don Vasta, Mark Sullivan, Alex Morrison and friend Mimi. Third was team 633 with Bruce Kirby, Howard Seymour, Curt Altmann and Bobby Lawrence.

Race two, another W2, had an interesting beginning with the fleet starting on port tack. After that, it was all good for Team 619 as they took the gun. They were followed by 506 with Scott, TK and Chris Daley in second and Team 500 with Commodore Bill Jayson, Commodore Randy Tankoos, Geoff Marshall and Andrea Kostinecki in third.

For the day, winning the Commodore's Races was Team 619 with just 3 points.
Second was Team 500 (much to the chagrin or Commodore Hersam) with 7 points.
Third was Team 506 with 8.

Lee Morrison's Team 619 wins the Commodore's Race

"Wait a minute..."
"That's more like it!" Bill Jayson accepts Team 500's 2nd place award. He is also now accepting applications to join Team 500 as jib trimmer.
Which award is for the Commodore's Race?
For the series, the overall including a drop, looked like this:

1st - 506 with 8
2nd - 619 with 11
3rd - 605 with 15

Scott and TK with their Series (1st) and Commodore's Race (3rd) awards.
Lee Morrison accepts the award for Team 619

Accepting the award for Team 605: Ian Monro

As always, all scores have been posted on http://www.fleet1.org/

Next week club fleet racing resumes on Sunday.

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS:

This coming Saturday is the 52nd annual Friends and Neighbors race put on by the cruising fleet. We'd love to see a Sonar fleet out there racing. As an incentive, Fleet 1 will pay the entry fee for any Fleet 1 member Sonar who races. Please contact Paul Steinborn if you are interested in participating.

YRALIS

The YRALIS is holding it's annual championship regatta on August 6-7. With 6 boats, the Sonars can get their own start. This would be a nice way to show the class is lively.

Racing is off Greenwich. Please let Bruce McArthur know if this is something you'd like to try.

GIRLS OPTI CLINIC

We have the Girls Opti clinic coming up in 5 days.  As you recall, we end up having about 40 parents arrive at the club on Sunday morning to drop off their kids and then return around 5 pm for pickup.

To prevent parking issues on Sunday afternoon, please carpool from Hindley or Weed Beach to keep the number of cars to a minimum.

CREW AVAILABLE:

If you want to crew, Try going to the Want to Crew tab on the left column of the club site (http://norotonyc.org/).
