SONAR FLEET 1 NEWSLETTER

FLEET RACING:

Sunday July 17:

Summer has arrived. Today was a sunny, hot, light air day. Wind was out of the south (200º) at around 5-6 kts. With that, PRO Geoff Durno and his RC ran three Races, two D1's and a W1.

The first 2 races were pretty straight forward. Clean starts, low but consistent breeze. As we've come to expect, Team 506 with Scott MacLeod, TK, Peggy Hersam and Chris Daley had great boat speed and remained the boat to beat by taking the gun in both races.

In race one, despite missing Ian who was away at sleep away camp, Team 605 with Bob Monro, Francesca Monro, Kevin Marks, Tatiana Dunbar-Hill finished second. They were followed by Team 654 with Morgan Connor, Craig Jones, Jan Raymond and Joshua Raymond.

Race two saw similar results except it was Team 726 with Paul Steinborn Jr, Michael Aingorn and Elizabeth Steinborn who finished second, followed by Team 605.

Race three was another story all together. The wind was diminishing but the RC felt there was still a chance to get a third race in. Unfortunately, there was a general recall at the start, delaying the race by about 15 minutes.

By the next start, the breeze was getting really spotty,  but the RC boat was still showing 5 kts and so went with a short D1... up and back.

Shortly after the start, they were seeing about 3 kts. The RC watched the racing closely and thought about an abandonment but all boats, not just the first, made the windward mark in under the time limit (30 minutes) and the first boat crossed the finished in just 39 minutes making the race official.

Still it was a grueling race. One competitor likened it to "45 minutes of waterboarding."

Ahh... Long Island Sound in the summer.

In the end, Team 690, Jager, with John Bainton, Gregg Delany, PD Duncan and Court Crane managed the conditions best and took the gun. Jager was followed by Team 726 in second and Team 633 with Howard Seymour, Kurt Altman and Bob Lawrence in third.

For the day...

1st - Team 726 with 8 points
2nd - Team 605 with 9
3rd - Team 506 with 10

Daily winners: Paul Steinborn, Elizabeth Steinborn and Michael Aingorn

As always, complete results can be found here: http://www.fleet1.org/

Nice to see Ken Coventry out there!

POLL RESULT:

We had 19 responses to last weeks poll about changing the start time for fleet racing. As we probably should have expected, we ended with about a 50-50 split between staying where we are or moving to a later time (the "others" were 3 for later, one for staying). So for now, we guess we continue to enjoy each others company on the patio on days when the breeze needs to build.

COOKOUT:

Our next cookout is scheduled for this coming Sunday, July 24. We still need a volunteer to host it. Hopefully we don't have to cancel. Please contact Bruce McArthur if you want to step up. Otherwise, answer a call from Scott Harrison at your own risk.

YRALIS

The YRALIS is holding it's annual championship regatta on August 6-7. With 6 boats, the Sonars can get their own start. This would be a nice way to show the class is lively.

With support, this could become our annual Long Island Sound Championship.

Racing is off Greenwich. Please let Bruce McArthur know if this is something you'd be willing to do.
